November 2008

A meeting and workshop space for an award winning conservation charity.

  • The Brief
  • Our Solution

Cornwall Council needed a building to locate the conservation charity BTCV. The brief was to create reception, office, meeting and workshop space in a comfortable, relaxing, welcoming and secure environment. The site was quite challenging as it boarded a stream on one side and an access road and car park on the other.

We built a long, curved building that fitted within the constraints of the space. A turf roof, with the habitat it creates and sound insulation properties, are perfect for a conservation charity building. We were unable to gain permission to utilise the stream for energy so installed an air-source heat pump instead which keeps the building maintained at a comfortable temperature, reducing their electric bills for heating by approx 60%. Marmoluem was used as the main flooring finish as its tough, waterproof, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sound; very much suited to this multi-purpose space.
