Fowey House

March 2009

A private home for a large family, overlooking the beautiful Fowey river.

  • Our Solution

To create a contemporary timber Eco home in a south facing, 4 acre vineyard, overlooking the river Fowey. The client bought the plot with planning permission, for a dwelling that neither took advantage of the stunning views or had any environmental considerations.

Working with the existing plans, we redesigned the house using the same footprint, but with the addition of a sunroom, utility room/porch and wrap around veranda. Planning permission was approved for the change of design, which included Cedar cladding (Cedar shingles were used on the tower partly for the ascetics but mainly to achieve the curve). The ground floor was open plan in design, with the 1st floor supported by Oak beams. The south facing sunroom added warmth to the building in the early spring and late autumn, and the super insulated nature of the building means additional heating from the wood burner is rarely required. As natural light was important to the client we incorporated an Oak atrium on the 1st floor and floor to ceiling windows on the ground floor.

The materials used are of an excellent quality, and the overall workmanship of a very high standard, including some fine detail in the carpentry. Tim is very willing and easy to approach whenever there is a need to discuss anything. it is obvious he loves his work and cares how he builds.
